World of Warcraft coming to the iPad and iPhone?
World of Warcraft prepares for world domination as Blizzard looks into porting WoW to the iPhone and iPad
Having already dominated the MMORPG industry, World of Warcraft developer Blizzard has announced it is looking into delivering the gaming phenomenon to our iThings.
As any die-hard WoW fan will know, iOS currently offers a World of Warcraft Armoury app for viewing character sheets, using the Auction House and managing guilds. A full World of Warcraft app would mean getting the full WoW experience on your iPhone of iPad, and a potentially less mundane commute.
Speaking to Eurogamer, World of Warcraft producer John Lagrave said World of Warcraft for iOS is still in the early stages of planning, and is therefore some way off in terms of development – so it’s probably not worth getting too over-excited at this stage. But, if the world’s most subscribed to MMORPG is indeed coming to an iDevice near you, the future of handheld gaming is sure to get a boost from this hugely popular addition, further bolstering predictions that the future of handheld gaming lies with smartphones and tablets.
The iPad 3, with its gorgeous Retina Display, quad-core graphics and 1GB of RAM is certainly a good place to start.
Of course, porting a game like World of Warcraft to touchscreen devices isn’t with its problems, but games such as Gameloft’s Order and chaos have proved that it is definitely doable. Commenting on the potential future app, Lagrave said: “Maybe we’ll stumble on the great way to put WOW on the phone – maybe we won’t, but we’re certainly looking into it.”
If impatience has already washed over you, take comfort in the fact you may soon be able to play your favourite MMORPG on Facebook, thanks to Gaikai. All we can say is, watch this space.
