Microsoft and Nokia are taking the fight to iOS and Android with the newly unveiled Lumia 920. Here’s everything you need to know – updated with release date info!
The Nokia Lumia 920 has just been unveiled by both Nokia and Microsoft – with an array of shiny new colours and packing Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 8 OS. But how does it stack up against the iPhones and Galaxy S3s of the mobile world? Let’s take a closer look.
Nokia Lumia 920 – design and build
Packing the same polycarbonate shell as the Lumia 900, the Lumia 920’s frame is virtually scratch free and doesn’t interfere with your phone connection. Plus it comes in the usual rainbow of Nokia colours, including new yellow, lipstick red, and slate grey hues.

The Lumia 920’s screen is the fastest LCD display ever made on smartphone – 2.5 times faster than competitors, according to Nokia, with PureMotion HD+ that offers higher than 720p resolution. It’s also the brightest Lumia yet – 25 per cent brighter than its closest rival. Plus a super sensitive touch screen means it’ll even react accurately to your touch with gloves on.
Nokia Lumia 920 – camera
There’s a host of new camera features packed into the Nokia Lumia 920’s snapper. PureView tech means the camera captures five to ten times more light than other smartphones with its f2.0 aperture – the same as the HTC One X – as well as keeping the shutter open for longer. But it won’t blur in low light settings, thanks to optical image stabilisation that lets the entire camera float – it’s apparently 50 per cent more effective than the image stabilisation tech in rival high-end smartphones.
Nokia’s also added extra software features, in the form of Lens apps that can be accessd from within the camera app. Smart Shoot takes multiple shots and lets you remove moving elements from the picture – genius. Cinemagraph captures an image but also lets you add motion at certain points – like a flag flapping in the breeze. Think looping GIFs and you’ll get the idea.
Nokia Lumia 920 – battery
Wireless charging means you can lob the phone down on a charging pad – like the FatBoy charging pillow above – and it’ll start juicing up its 2000mAh battery. There’s also a JBL Power Up speaker that uses wireless charging and NFC to connect and charge your phone by simply dropping it on top – impressive.
Nokia Lumia 920 – Windows Phone 8
We’ve only been given a teaser of Windows Phone 8 so far but we can expect innovations in maps, the Start Screen, and the camera. The Start Screen now fits smaller icons that offer up notification numbers and live news on apps like CNN.
Nokia Maps now features offline mapping and indoor maps, and can work out when you need to leave for your daily commute by calculating routes and traffic. And the camera, as mentioned above, integrates third-party apps as Lenses as well as adding pinch to zoom. More WP8 OS details should arrive when Microsoft launches the Surface on October 26th.
Nokia Lumia 920 – price and release date
The Lumia 920 will be the flagship Windows Phone 8 handset – suggesting a price around the £500 mark, though Nokia has yet to confirm pricing and availability. According to a telcoms operator quoted by Reuters, the Lumia 920 will ship “in the second half of November.”
