Sky puts 4K on the starting grid for 2017 Formula One season
Super sharp visuals, even at 180mph from an F1 cockpit
F1 fans are in for a treat next year – Sky is bringing the entire 2017 season to Sky Q in Ultra High Definition.
That’s 4K, people – so many pixels you’ll be able to see the drivers sweat while they take hairpin corners at 180mph.
The announcement comes off the back of Sky inking a deal with F1 management to be the exclusive home of Formula One in the UK and Ireland from 2019 to 2024.
It’ll be the only place to watch live coverage of every Grand Prix, and if you’ve got the right package you’ll be able to tune in at 4K resolution.
Sky is promising to bring at least two other ‘prime time’ races to its upcoming Sky Sports Mix channel per season. That means anyone with a Sky subscription will be able to watch, even if they don’t pay for Sky Sports or Sky Sports F1.
The British Grand Prix will also be shown on a ‘free-to-air’ basis, although we don’t really know what that means. Free to Sky customers, or free to everyone?
F1 fans that pay for Sky Sports will get to watch every race weekend, but you’ll need to have a Sky Q set-top box and subscription in order to get 4K.
There’s still no word on whether access to 4K will set you back some additional cash, though, or a more concrete date for when 4K will arrive for Sky’s other channels.
