Scorching Nissan GT-R Drone does 0-62mph in 1.3 seconds
And it’ll tear through the skies at up to 115mph – until its battery runs out
Everybody’s going crazy for drones, it seems. Even Nissan, better know for making four-wheeled road warriors than four-rotored flyers, is getting in on the action.
The company today unveiled the GT-R Drone, a sleek quadcopter primed for speed. With its low-drag canopy and finely-tuned build, it’s capable of hitting 62mph from a standing (hovering?) start in a paltry 1.3 seconds, and its speed tops out at a sizzling 115mph.
That’s a lot faster than your average consumer drone. The DJI Phantom 4, for instance, will reach speeds of 45mph – and while reviewing it, we even found that mildly terrifying. But the GT-R is a custom racing drone, designed to be flown by experienced pilots using FPV (first-person view) goggles that place them into a sort of virtual cockpit, able to see what’s in front of the ‘copter.
It’s also not going to be sold as a product, so you don’t have to worry about one of these slicing your head off in your local park. Nissan has instead created it (in conjunction with World Drone Prix champions Tornado Xblades Racing) as a means of promoting the 2017 GT-R, its new 196mph four-wheel drive racer.
