Niro Nakamichi SSS – 5.1 surround sound from 2.1 speakers
Fancy the all-enveloping awesomeness of 5.1-channel surround sound without the all-enveloping messiness of five speakers, a subwoofer and several yard
Fancy the all-enveloping awesomeness of 5.1-channel surround sound without the all-enveloping messiness of five speakers, a subwoofer and several yards of cabling? Well, the new NIRO SSS from Niro Nakamichi could be right up your sonic street.
SSS stands for “spherical surround system”, and apparently that’s exactly what the system produces. Its two speaker enclosures use five separate drivers to spread movie and game surround effects around your living room – even behind where you’re sitting, apparently – while the attached sub goes to work on the low-end rumbles and booms.
But haven’t we heard all this from soundbars, which use only one speaker enclosure to deliver 5.1 loveliness? Nakamichi claims that the SSS is different, and that because it separates the front channels from the rear channels (the former come from a speaker you place at the base of your TV, the latter from one that goes above it), you’ll hear a much more separated, widened and clearer soundfield.
The SSS supports Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby Pro Logic II and has inputs for up to four digital and two analogue sources. It’s available now from Metropolis Music for the princely sum of £1,575.
