Nikon launches Android-powered S810c and lens-swapping 1 J4 cameras
One’s built for social, the other’s built for speed
Nikon has ripped the wrappings off a pair of new cameras: the Nikon 1 J4 compact system camera and the Nikon S810c Android-powered point-and-shoot.
The 18.4MP 1 J4 is the latest model in the company’s 1 range of mirrorless interchangeable lens models, and like its predecessors it’s compact and quick. In fact, it boasts what Nikon describes as a “game-changing” hybrid autofocus system with no fewer than 171 autofocus points, 105 of which are ultra-speedy phase detection points, and can shoot continuously at up to 60fps (dependent on settings) or 20fps with continuous autofocus. It can also record HD movies in 120fps for super slow motion playback.
It comes with a 3in touchscreen and built-in Wi-Fi, which allows you to instantly share photos to your tablet or smartphone, as well as use a selection of apps to control creative functions.
Nikon has yet to confirm pricing for the 1 J4, but has announced that it will be on sale from June.
A second shot at Android
The Nikon Coolpix S810c is the company’s second shot at a compact point-and-shoot camera with Android (the first being the somewhat underwhelming Coolpix S800c, which we reviewed back in October 2012). Nikon describes it as a “significant improvement” over its predecessor thanks to a 12x optical zoom lens, 16MP CMOS sensor, wider 3.7in touchscreen, 4GB of built-in storage and the inclusion of Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean (no word of a KitKat upgrade as yet).
Using the S810c’s Wi-Fi connection, you can download photo apps like Instagram, Snapseed and VSCO Cam from the Google Play Store in order to edit and share your shots online. And of course you can also install the likes of Facebook, Flickr and Twitter and upload images and videos straight to them.
The Nikon Coolpix S810c will be on sale from 24th April, priced at £250.
