New Batman v Superman trailer shows why the Dark Knight is so upset
It's a better, more nuanced look than the first trailer, which wasn't very well received
When the first Batman v Superman teaser released in April, many fans weren’t thrilled with the very dark, almost joyless nature of it, spending the ensuing weeks taking potshots at director Zack Snyder and DC’s soon-to-expand rebooted cinematic universe.
Today, the reaction is decidedly less hostile as the new extended trailer, running nearly four minutes in length, debuted at San Diego Comic-Con and quickly spread across the web. True, not every hot take is a positive one, but comic fans seem a little more optimistic about what’s ahead.
The new Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer, embedded below, shows just why Batman is so upset with a fellow hero: Superman unwittingly demolished much of Metropolis at the end of 2013’s Man of Steel, and Bruce Wayne himself was there to experience the madness and see just how powerful Superman can be.
It’s that fear of Superman’s strength that drives Batman’s pursuit and sets up the primary, titular struggle in the film. And the trailer shows a fair bit more: the first appearance of Wonder Woman, a good look at Lex Luthor, and more on how Batman’s origin story will be presented (yet again) in this revised film setting.
Dawn of Justice is due out on 25 March 2016, and will be followed quickly by DC’s Suicide Squad later in the year. And it’s just the start of huge commitment from DC and Warner Bros. that will see an Avengers-esque Justice League movie series serve as the core around which standalone character films also form.
Just today, at Comic-Con, DC announced that Green Lantern Corps is planned for 2020, with Star Trek star Chris Pine rumoured for the lead role of Hal Jordan. The earlier Green Lantern film from 2011 was widely panned, but this ought to be a new take. And Batman v Superman star Ben Affleck is rumoured to direct, co-write, and star in a standalone Batman movie for 2018, as well.
