Kobo launches Kobo Arc Android tablet and e-readers
Kobo pre-empts Amazon's launch with a Kindle Fire 2 tablet rival – plus Kobo Mini and front-lit Kobo Glo e-readers
Kobo has pre-empted Amazon’s big announcement with its own e-reader launch, with an Android tablet and a pair of e-readers that mirror Amazon’s own line-up.
The Kobo Arc is the flagship – a 7in Android tablet that’s clearly gunning for the Kindle Fire. The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich slate will arrive packing an 1280×800 IPS display, a 1.5GHz processor and 1GB of RAM, plus a front-facing camera.
A Tapestries Discovery Edition feature lets you build up a list of your favourite e-books, videos, music and other media by pinning them to a Tapestry – the Arc will then recommend new suggestions based on your chosen favourites.
Available in Wi-Fi only – no 3G, folks – Kobo promises up to 10 hours of reading with Wi-Fi off and two weeks on Standby. Expect to pay £160 for an 8GB model or £190 for the 16GB variant on its launch in November.

The Kobo Glo is a front-lit e-ink e-reader that’s aimed squarely at the Nook with GlowLight and Amazon’s rumoured Kindle PaperWhite reader. The Wi-Fi only reader packs a 6in hi-res touchscreen, backed up with a promised battery life of 55 hours with the light turned on. 1GB of storage space is expandable by up to 32GB with a microSD card slot. It’s priced at £100 and will be available from October 1st.
The Kobo Mini e-reader’s the baby brother of the range, with a 5in e-ink touchscreen, two weeks’ battery life, Wi-Fi and 1GB storage. The price is pretty tiny, too, at £60 – and with a weight of around 133g, Kobo’s claiming it’s the lightest e-reader on the market,. Well, Amazon may have a thing or two to say about that at its launch event.
