iPhone 3.0 may have barely been out a month but Apple is already working on its 3.1 successor, and beta 2 of the OS now live for developers.

Only available to registered developers, the biggest addition so far appears to be that there is a public API for manipulating live video. This could very well mean that 3.1 will allow the quite brilliant augmented reality apps that currently only jailbroken iPhones can take advantage of.

This means that the AR apps we love, like Nearest Tube, Twittaround and Sekai Camera could soon be much more readily available – not to mention open the doors to more developers to make them.

Engadget also spotted that Apple has found a way on the new beta to prevent tethering hacking, at least with AT&T. Time will tell if this will prevent it on O2 as well.
