It’s sleek, sultry and seductive, as these pictures show, but the improvements on Apple’s iPhone 4 are more than skin deep. Scroll through these these pages to find out all the minutiae that make up the new gadget messiah.

Retina Display With almost as many pixels as the iPad, the new iPhone’s 960×640 resolution is huge. Apple is defending its decision to stick with IPS LCD over AMOLED, and says this resolution would be impossible on the alternative screen tech

Front cam You can see the front-facing camera just left of the earpiece here. Apple seems to be claiming to have invented video calling with FaceTime, its iPhone-to-iPhone, Wi-Fi-only vid chat client. Wrong. But we think there will be apps that make good use of it

Headphone Apple learned not to recess the 3.5mm jack socket the hard way, and the flush effort here looks sturdier than ever. What’s the wee hole next to it? That’s a secondary mic for built-in noise-cancelling to cut out ambient noise from chats and tunes

Glass Both sides of Apple’s new handset are made from glass. And not just any glass – the company claims it has come up with a glass-manufacturing method that produces a material 30 times tougher than plastic. We’ll see what happens when it spends some time with our keys

Reception What are those lines in the otherwise fluid run of the aluminium siding? They’re circuit breaks. The side casing of the new iPhone is actually comprised of two aerials running around the body. Will it work? We hope so

Buttonry Gone is the volume rocker, to be replaced by two circular buttons. Although it hasn’t been announced, we’d like to see one of them modded into a shutter button in camera mode in future. That mute switch looks a bit harder to knock accidentally, too – good news

Fascia Despite the new look, the actual face of Apple’s latest iPhone hasn’t differed much from the 3GS (nor, in fact, the 3G or original iPhone). And the distinctive square-in-circle home button has now usurped the Clickwheel as the most identifiable element of Apple’s UI suite

Camera It may have been overdue a 5MP snapper for a while, but Apple is claiming that by maintaining the pixel size in its new cam, it will produce better results than competing cams. The science is spot on, but the proof will be in the photographic pudding. There’s also 720p vid shooting and the LED flash will run continuously if needed for low-light filming

Connect Design-aside, this end of the phone is pretty similar to previous incarnations. No surprises, though the crosshead screws of the 3GS have been replaced with something a bit harder for Joe Public to unwind. Could it be that Apple doesn’t want us peering inside? Surely not…

The end That’s all, folks, but don’t forget to check out all our other iPhone 4 stories here.
