Experience Star Wars in VR with upcoming Google Cardboard app
Pilot the Millennium Falcon? We can only hope
Star Wars is about to be the biggest thing in the world (again) with next month’s release of The Force Awakens, and Google is coming along for the ride. Earlier today, we heard about themed tweaks for Gmail and YouTube, among other Google services.
And now it seems that Google and Disney have teamed to release a special Cardboard VR experience, which promises serialized content and leads directly into the opening of The Force Awakens. It will be available within the official Star Wars app on both Android and iPhone.
What can we expect? Well, it’s not a lock, but Google’s vice president of product management hinted at a very cool possibility in a blog post today. “When we first heard about Episode VII, we started thinking about what a Google tribute to these epic stories might look like,” he writes, recalling their internal conversations. “‘Wouldn’t it be cool if there was some sort of Star Wars thingy in Search? The Millennium Falcon in Cardboard would be sweet!'”
Piloting the Millennium Falcon in virtual reality? Yeah, we’re into that – but we wouldn’t mind seeing a few different scenarios to explore, of course. We heard over the summer that Lucasfilm and its technical divisions had established a studio just for VR and augmented reality efforts, so this may be our first widespread taste of its fruit.
And it won’t be long, either: the app will release on 2 December, or a week from Wednesday. Make sure you have a Cardboard viewer handy – you can make one, if need be – and hopefully it’ll live up to the immense hype of both Star Wars and VR.
