Dish be damned: Sky Stream UK launch date confirmed

18th October for full Sky TV experience via broadband

Sky has finally set a date for its long-awaited Stream, an internet streaming device that brings the firm’s full satellite TV experience without the need for a pesky dish (or having to buy a new Sky Glass TV).

In a move that’s made sense for longer than we care to admit, UK customers will be able to buy a Stream puck from the 18th of October. It’ll be sold on either a 31-day rolling contract, with the option to cancel at any time, or an 18-month contract with the promise of better value.

The rolling contract will cost £29 a month, while the 18-month contract will set you back £26 a month. Both include a set-up fee (£40 for rolling contracts, £20 for 18-month ones) but don’t require an engineer to visit your house: the box is plug-and play. A Whole Home pack costs an extra £12 per month and supports up to five additional Stream devices anywhere in your home.

Whack the Stream into your existing telly and you’ll have full access to all the Sky channels you care to subscribe to, in addition to all the major streaming apps like Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, and more. Add-ons include Sky Cinema, Sky Sports, BT Sport, and UHD & Dolby Atmos.

Sky Stream was actually announced alongside the Sky Glass TV last year, but until now, could only be used as a multiroom-esque device to let existing subscribers bestow Sky to other TVs in their home.

This new announcement sees Stream come into its own as a standalone device, letting you subscribe to the full-fat Sky experience without the hassle of sticking something on your roof or paying for a new telly that you don’t really need.

Not only that, but you’ll also grace your TV with the same voice controlled powers found in Sky Glass, along with the same recommendation features to boot. Think an Amazon Fire Stick or Nvidia Shield device, except with a distinctive Sky flavour. Mmmm.
