The Apple Wunderlust Event took place today in California. Here are all the new products that were announced during the show including the new phones, watches and more.
Which was pretty much what was rumoured to launch prior to the event.
Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max
With rounded edges, a new Action Button (customisable), 10Gbps USB-C and a titanium outer, there’s a few design changes. The new 3nm A17 Pro chipset offers performance improvements, but they’re not game changing. But it’s in the camera department that things have really changed – Apple reckons it’s the equivalent of seven camera lenses.
There’s a 3x telephoto on the standard iPhone 15 Pro, but the Pro Max boasts a 5x telephoto lens instead.
You get 24MP images as standard from the main 48MP sensor which has a new coating to reduce lens flare, produce sharper images, and let more light in at night. You can shoot in 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm focal lengths.It can shoot in ProRAW and 48MP HEIF formats, too.
iPhone 15 and 15 Plus
The Dynamic Island has made its way from last year’s Pro devices to the standard iPhone 15 which is powered by A16 Bionic. The main camera has a serious upgrade with a new 48MP sensor plus the 12MP telephoto now uses the new sensor for 2x zoomed photos. Portrait shots and night mode have also been slightly improved.
There’s USB-C support as heavily rumoured and the new device is available in pink, yellow, green, blue, and black.
Apple Watch Series 9
When it comes to the Apple Watch Series 9, the main take home info you need to know comes in the S9 SiP chip. Performance and capabilities are set to be upgraded on 22 September once the smartwatch is shipped out. And there’s a new gesture to go with it. That would be the double tap, where two touches of your thumb and index finger can control what you’re seeing and who you’re speaking to.
Beyond that, the Apple Watch Series 9 runs on watchOS 10 straight out of the box, and comes with redesigned apps, a Smart Stack feature, new watch faces and new cycling and hiking features.
Apple Watch Ultra 2
The most rugged Apple Watch yet is about to get, well, more rugged. The Apple Watch Ultra 2 takes on the elements with a brand new S9 SiP chip that claims to improve speed and response times. And yes, it also features double tap. At 3000 nits, the smartwatch features a pretty impressive bright display, as well as an expanded altitude range, on-device Siri, Precision Finding for iPhone, and advanced features for swimming and diving. At $799/£799, it’s certainly not cheap, but there are crazier things to spend your money on.
AirPods Pro with USB-C
A minor entry, but significant nonetheless. The AirPods Pro (2nd generation) now have a USB-C connector instead of Lightning. That’s the only change.
What didn’t appear at Apple’s Wonderlust launch
There weren’t any new iPad or Mac models at the event. These will most likely be reserved for a later launch in October or November. It’s unclear if this will take place at another standalone event, or via press release. Apple has done both before around this time.
While there is a new iPhone SE on the way and Wonderlust was the iPhone event, this new budget device didn’t make it’s appearance here. We’re not expecting this device to debut until March 2024/25 – which is still a long way off. It’s a similar story for the Vision Pro headset – which Apple has now told us will hit the shelves in early 2024. And there were no new HomePod or Apple TV devices at this event either.
