Amazon Prime Video could get a VR upgrade soon
Virtual reality video is getting closer
Amazon could be next in line with a plan for virtual reality – but don’t expect another VR headset just yet.
According to a job listing on Glassdoor, Amazon is currently on the hunt for a Software Develompment manager specialising in VR. There’s no sign if they’re also after a proof-reader.
The listing is searching for someone to build a virtual reality experience for Amazon Video, rather than work on hardware.
That sounds like the company is looking to compete with Netflix and Hulu, which are both working on VR support.
Netflix already has a VR app for Samsung’s Gear VR, but currently focuses on 2D content. It’s keeping a close eye on the tech, though, and is considering when to start making 360-degree video.
Hulu is due to launch its own app, as well as 360-degree content to watch on it, before the summer.
Right now it’s not clear which route Amazon wants to take; the listing seems to suggest apps with VR support will come first, but original content could follow later.
Amazon’s been on a bit of a VR push of late, launching a landing page for all things virtual reality and releasing a handful of patents covering VR and augmented reality tech.
That means an Amazon-brand VR headset isn’t completely out of the question – just don’t expect it to arrive any time soon.
