Gaming gods be praised: PS4 update streams games to your PC and Mac
PlayStation 4 users will soon have more freedom to frag
Sony PlayStation 3.50 system update. Sounds dry doesn’t it? But don’t be fooled – it’s going to make a lot of gamers very happy indeed.
That’s because Sony is bringing Remote Play functionality to PCs and Macs, letting gamers play PS4 games in another room, or even remotely, internet connection-permitting.
The PS4 already supports Remote Play with the Vita and selected Xperia flagships, and the new update will be compatible with Windows PCs and Macs which meet certain software requirements: namely Windows 8.1, Windows 10 or later, or OS X 10.10, OS X 10.11.
Resolution and frame rate will be dependent on bandwidth, and resolution options include 360p, 540p and 720p, while the frame rate can be switched between standard (30 fps) or high (60 fps).
The new update has also made a number of improvements to the social side of the PlayStation 4 with features such as the capability to appear offline (about time), enable notifications when specific friends come online, and schedule events for game sessions, which will add registered players to a party at a desired time.
Other new features include the addition of Dailymotion and Live from PlayStation, as well as the introduction of teen accounts and ‘Play Together’, which allows a member of a Party to see what everyone is playing, making it easier for you to jump into a friend’s game.
Once the update lands tomorrow (6 April), there’ll be no need to argue over the television, as long as you’ve got a laptop or monitor handy. Everyone wins, and you get to carry on gaming. Sorted.
