See the epic first Warcraft movie trailer
Blizzard's big-budget adaptation hits cinemas next summer
More than 20 years after its debut, Blizzard’s Warcraft franchise continues to thrive – and in new and different forms these days. Case in point: it’s about to be a film, and here’s the first trailer!
Today at BlizzCon 2015, Blizzard debuted the embedded trailer below during its keynote address, showing a full look at the CG-heavy live-action flick. Here we see the familiar battle between humans and orcs, albeit rendered in eye-popping detail like never portrayed in the more cartoonish-looking games.
The project was first announced nearly a decade ago, and it’s been almost three years since Duncan Jones was confirmed as director. Jones, director of Moon and Source Code (and son of David Bowie), wrapped filming a year and a half ago, with a lengthy post-production cycle needed to nail all the effects shots.
Warcraft stars Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, and a wide roster of other actors, with a budget pegged at US$100 million (about £66 million). It’s due out on 10 June 2016, and hopefully the huge number of Warcraft players in all its incarnations – including the recent Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft online card game – will turn out and make it worth their while.
More pressingly, here’s hoping it’s the very rare video game adaptation that’s actually worth a damn. Given Jones’ pedigree, we remain hopeful for next summer.
