Icon – Peugeot Onyx scooter
Peugeot's copper-plated ride of the future is a three-wheeled hybrid that transforms from sedate to sporty in seconds
Looks like it’s driven straight out of Mega-City One…
The Peugeot Onyx scooter may look like Judge Dredd’s weekend motor, but this futuristic black and copper three-wheeler is actually all about saving the environment with its hybrid powertrain.
How much oomph does it produce?
You get a 400cc engine and an electric motor driving the rear wheel – producing 60hp and 43 ft-lbs of torque, for a top speed of 93mph. Impressive, for a scooter – plus it’ll manage 117mpg, and the battery will drive it for 18 miles with the diesel switched off.
Any other tricks up its sleeve?
Yup – the Peugeot Onyx scooter has a removable storage unit behind the handlebars, called a ClipBox. With the ClipBox plugged in – as seen in the picture above – the scooter’s in Sport Mode, with the rider adopting a superbike-style riding position. Remove it and the Onyx slips into Urban Mode, allowing you to sit up straight for a more sedate ride.
I’m sold. How much?
Hold hard there. The Peugeot Onyx is a concept design – from a line-up including a supercar (featured in our 25 best concept cars ever) and a racing bicycle. They’ll be shown off at the 2012 Paris Motor Show later in the month – until then, you’ll just have to drool from a distance.
