Mortal Kombat X out in 2015 for platforms old and new

Check out the first trailer for the online multiplayer-centric entry

No big surprise here: after teaser posters emerged late last week, Mortal Kombat X has been announced, and it’s coming out next year.

As we suspected, the latest blood-soaked fighter will launch on both last-gen and new-gen consoles, which means it’ll appear on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, along with PC.

The trailer below isn’t likely comprised of actual gameplay footage, but it gives an idea of the aesthetic direction that developer NetherRealm Studios is going in with this one. It certainly has more of a cinematic edge to it, along with environmental interactions—which the studio explored with last year’s entertaining Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Publisher Warner Bros. issued a press release noting a “new fully-connected experience that launches players into a persistent online contest where every fight matters in a global battle for supremacy.” We assume that means much more than just simple fights and multiplayer lobbies for online competition.

Mortal Kombat X will also introduce multiple versions of each fighter, letting you pick and choose based on fighting preferences, and it promises both familiar faces and new combatants. It sounds like another rich story mode is included, as well, so there’s surely some solid single-player content in the mix.

We’ll get a better look at Mortal Kombat X next week at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, where the game will debut in advance of its release next year.
