Unreal Tournament maker Epic Games teases new PC shooter, Paragon
It has an interesting motivation-based system that affects your perks
Epic Games is probably best known for its Unreal Engine these days, but the studio behind Unreal Tournament and Gears of War (the latter now handled in-house by Microsoft) is starting to ramp up its development efforts again with a focus on PC.
Unreal Tournament is on its way back to life as a community-assisted, free-to-play game, while stylized survival-action game Fortnite is also slated to be a free-to-play PC affair. And today, the studio teased Paragon, another game destined for PC that we assume will also be a shooter.
Why make that assumption? Well, Twinblast here (see video below) is the first announced character, and as his name suggests, he dual-wields firearms in battle. Fellow characters are named Steel, Sparrow, Dekker, and Grux, and Epic Games will apparently share more info about one new character per week until December rolls around. But given the distinctive heroes, we expect class differences in the fray.
Also, based on the few details found on the site, it seems that choosing between fortune, glory, infamy, or pride as your primary motivator may affect your perks in battle. And while it’s not clear yet whether Paragon will be a free-to-play game, we have a hunch it will be based on Epic’s other current projects, not to mention the increasing industry slant in that direction.
For example, Cliff Bleszinski – who once led Epic Games to glory with Unreal Tournament and Gears of War – is developing LawBreakers for next year. And Blizzard’s dazzling Overwatch just entered beta ahead of its own proper free-to-play release. Will Paragon‘s intriguing motivation system help set it apart in an increasingly crowded freemium pool? We’re eager to find out.
