Panasonic has announced its latest interchangeable lens camera, the Lumix G7. And like a lot of recent products from the manufacturer, it’s putting 4K front and centre.

Panasonic was the first company to release a lens-swapping system camera with 4K video in the form of its Lumix GH4, but that was a premium model with a price tag to match. The G7, on the other hand, starts at just £599 body only, making it by far the most affordable 4K system camera on the market. (In comparison, the GH4 is £1,150 body only, and Samsung’s 4K-compatible NX1 is £1,300.)

It’s definitely a camera aimed at amateur photographers, then, but in the right hands it should be more than capable of delivering pro-quality images and video. The specs are impressive, with the G7’s 16MP sensor able to record video at a resolution of 3840 x 2160 and a speed of 30fps. The camera’s 4K Photo feature lets you extract full-resolution stills (at 8MP quality) from your 4K videos, which is a nice touch.

There’s also an OLED viewfinder and a 3in 1,040,000-dot swivelling LCD touchscreen, Wi-Fi and a 3.5mm microphone socket, all in a body that weighs only 410g.

The Panasonic Lumix G7 will be available from mid June in black and silver finishes (the latter exclusive to Jessops). Prices start at £599 body only, and £679 with a kit lens included.
