Licensed Apple Watch docks coming

You’ll find a variety of third-party Apple Watch charging docks on the market today, but they all share one common feature: the need for users to attach Apple’s magnetic charger, which must be added to the dock (like with this Mophie one here). However, that may change soon, as 9to5Mac reports that Apple will let MFi (Made for iPhone/iPad/iPod) partners release officially licensed all-in-one Watch docks.

With MFi certification, they’ll be able to create docks that have the charging mechanism built right into the accessory, which will allow for more flexibility in design and approach. Apple has just made the components available to MFi device makers, so it could be months still before we actually see anything on the market. But now that we know, you might reconsider buying a current dock.

Jurassic World sequel dated

Jurassic World has been a smash success beyond even the most optimistic projections, this week passing the original The Avengers as the #3 highest-grossing film of all time worldwide. It’s racked up US$1.52 billion (nearly £1 billion) in box office receipts – and it still hasn’t opened in Japan.

Naturally, Universal will return to the franchise, and yesterday it revealed the date: 22 June 2018. No official name has been announced, although Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will return, and director Colin Trevorrow will co-write the script with Derek Connelly, although it’s not clear if Trevorrow plans to direct the follow-up as well.

GoPro streaming to Meerkat

Apps like Meerkat and Periscope are making live-streaming video incredibly easy and accessible to anyone with a smartphone, and the rival apps are starting to usher in upgrades as they attempt to one-up each other. The latest? Live GoPro streaming with Meerkat.

CNBC reports that the iPhone version of the app now lets you pair a GoPro Hero3 camera for live video, while the next update will allow GoPro Hero4 compatibility as well. It’s sure to enable better-quality streams from dedicated users, not to mention the ability to capture footage in ways that a smartphone just isn’t designed for. Start checking those feeds!

Google’s Spotlight Stories hits iPhone

Google has its fingers in a whole lot of pies these days, including 360-degree short films viewable on your phone – and after drawing acclaim on Android, its Spotlight Stories app is now available on iPhone. It has a handful of free animated and live-action clips to check out (don’t miss Duet), although the lack of Cardboard VR support on both platforms remains surprising.
